The impact beyond your trip
What does your journey make possible beyond the experience?
As you know, part of what makes our trips different is that they contribute to the communities we work with. But what does that actually look like on the ground? Here’s a little update on some of the things we’ve been able to support in the South Omo Valley recently.
Supporting Turmi Community Hospital

Last month, we were able to help bring some much-needed equipment to Turmi Community Hospital.
One of our previous guests, Monica, was so moved by what she saw during her trip that she raised money after returning home to help the hospital. Together, we were able to provide:
• A CPAP machine, giving doctors access to vital breathing support • 15 medical-grade mattresses, allowing the hospital to use 15 newly built rooms that had beds but no mattresses • A sterilising machine for the operating room, providing much-needed equipment for safe and proper sterilisation
These may sound like relatively simple things, but in a small rural hospital they can make a huge difference. Turmi hospital provides care to Turmi town, Dimeka town and the 50+ Hamar villages in the surrounding area.
The doctors and local government were incredibly grateful, particularly for the sterilising equipment and CPAP machine, which will help the hospital provide safer and better care to people across the surrounding communities.
We also covered the transport and taxes involved in getting all of the equipment to Turmi. These costs were substantial, but they are often the less visible part of getting much-needed equipment from a donor to where it is actually needed.
Supporting BABY Nadiya
More recently, a family in Turmi came to us asking for help for their four-month-old daughter, Nadiya.
Nadiya was born with a large hole in her heart and needs life-saving surgery. We were able to contribute a quarter of the total cost from our community fund and raise the remainder, helping her family get the treatment she needs.
We’ll keep you updated on Nadiya’s journey and on the other community projects we’re able to support through our trips.
What about the carbon from your trip?
All of our tours are carbon offset. We calculate the emissions from our trips and offset them as part of our responsibility for the environmental impact of travel.
We also plant a tree for every tour we operate in Ethiopia.
You can read more about our carbon offsetting, tree planting and other impact work on our new impact page. We publish our carbon emission offset certificate there, so you know we are accountable to our claims.
