Pick-up: I will meet you at Jinka Airport at 1:45 PM and drive you to your chosen accommodation, either a high-quality lodge or a cozy local guesthouse, depending on your preference.

Ari Tribe: We’ll visit the Ari tribe, based in Jinka, known for their incredible clay pottery. You’ll see the traditional process of making and decorating pottery, a vital skill in their culture.

Cultural Insight: If time allows, we’ll stop by the South Omo Valley Cultural Museum to deepen your understanding of the region’s history and culture before heading to the lodge/ guesthouse for a relaxing dinner.

Cultural Preparation + Photography briefing: Over dinner, I’ll teach you some basic words in Hamar and explain how to interact respectfully with local communities. It’s a quick but important introduction to ensure a culturally sensitive and enriching experience.

Drive to Turmi: After breakfast, we’ll embark on a scenic 3-hour drive to Turmi, stopping at the Alduba or Dimeka markets to observe local crafts and understand the importance of market days in the region.

Cooking Experience: Lunch will be a hands-on experience at my mother’s house, where you’ll learn how to make traditional Ethiopian dishes, including injera (a sour pancake made from teff). You’ll also receive a recipe and spice packets to try making it at home!

Hamar Village: Introduction to Hamar: Meet a local Hamar family you’ll get to know throughout the week. Enjoy your first Hamar buno (coffee) and learn each family member's roles. Play traditional games and some fun icebreaker games we will bring along.

Stay: In Turmi in a lodge or local guesthouse for the next four nights.

Morning: Under the shade of mango trees, we’ll learn about the Hamar’s rich jewelry-making tradition. Your local guide will explain the cultural significance behind the jewelry, and you can create your own piece with the help of an expert or choose a design for them to craft for you.

Traditional Hamar Lunch: Later, we’ll visit a local Hamar family for a traditional lunch. You’ll participate in grinding maize or sorghum, picking moringa leaves (a superfood!), and preparing traditional Hamar coffee made from coffee husks instead of beans. You’ll then share the meal with the family and learn about their daily life. (If you’re not fond of the local food, an alternative lunch can be arranged.)

Evening – Sunset & Dinner: Head to the best sunset viewpoint for magical views and enjoy dinner in town.

Honey Wine: If you like, we can stop by my mum's house to taste traditional honey wine.

Abore Tribe: In the morning, we’ll drive 1 hour to visit the Abore tribe. You’ll learn about their distinctive dress and see their traditional houses, made from branches and thatch, are arranged in circular family compounds surrounded by livestock.

Hamar Goat Night: In the evening, we’ll experience the Hamar’s famed goat roasting ceremony. Enjoy sitting on cow hides as the family prepares fresh meat, which takes about three hours. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in the process, or simply observe while your guide shares insights into Hamar beliefs aand superstitions.

Optional - For the adventurous: - spend the night in a basic tent in the Hamar village complete with a foam mattress. A simple, outdoor hole in the ground 'toilet' is available.

Optional - For the very adventurous: - sleep as the Hamar do - On a cowskin with a blanket and a wooden or no pillow inside a Hamar house. This is a once in a lifetime experience for those wanting to really walk in Hamar people's shoes. 

Morning: Wake up to the sounds of the Hamar village. After enjoying a coffee with the family, return to your lodge or guesthouse for a shower and breakfast before preparing for the Bull Jumping ceremony.

Bull Jumping Briefing: I’ll provide a thorough explanation of the cultural significance of bull jumping, the months of preparation that go into the ceremony, and the tradition’s deep-rooted connection to the Hamar people.

Afternoon: Witness the incredible bull jumping ceremony (if available), where a Hamar man transitions into adulthood by leaping over a herd of cattle. This is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.

Evening: Participate in Evangadi, a celebratory night dance marking the boy's transition. The village will gather to dance and celebrate this important milestone in the boy’s life. (Depends on availability + season.)​

Morning – Journey to Konso: We’ll set off early for a 4-hour drive to Konso, traveling on a mix of tarmac and dirt roads. Along the way, enjoy the changing landscapes as we approach this fascinating cultural region.

Konso Visit: Explore the Konso people’s remarkable stone terraces and fortified settlements, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy lunch while learning about their unique carved wooden statues and traditional games, gaining insight into their rich cultural heritage.

Afternoon – Travel to Arba Minch: After Konso, continue on a 2-hour tarmac drive to Arba Minch, known as the “City of 40 Springs.”

Evening – Dinner & Overnight in Arba Minch: Arrive by sunset and savor a delicious locally caught fresh fish dinner overlooking the stunning lakes of Arba Minch. Settle in for a restful night’s stay in this beautiful town.

Morning – Dorze Tribe: Visit the Dorze tribe for a hands-on weaving experience. Learn how they use the false banana tree for food and crafts, and sample traditional food and local liquor.

Late Morning – Crocodile Safari: Take a small boat for a private crocodile safari, with a chance to spot hippos in their natural habitat.

Lunch: Enjoy freshly caught local fish before heading to the airport.

Flight: Catch the 4:45pm flight back to Addis Ababa.
