Escape Addis: Experience Ethiopia through its people
Curated small-group trips designed for expats living in Ethiopia - combining comfort, community, and deeper cultural access you simply can't get on your own.

You’ve figured out life in Addis.
Now it’s time to experience more of the country you’re living in.
With rising fuel costs, limited time, and the stress of planning, many expats never make it beyond the city.
We’ve changed that:
→ Thoughtfully designed trips
→ Small groups of like-minded people
→ Seamless, fully organised travel
→ And what we do best - access to places and people most never see
All led by a trusted local guide who lives in the south and takes care of everything.

Why some expats never explore Ethiopia fully (and how to change that)
You’ve figured out Addis - what things should cost, where to go, who to trust.
But the moment you leave?
You’re back to zero.
-
Planning takes time you don’t have
-
Transport is unpredictable (and now increasingly expensive)
-
It’s hard to know what's actually worth it
-
You don't want to be treated like a tourist - or being surrounded by them
-
And doing it alone? Often stressful, sometimes overwhelming.
So most people stick to the same easy places - and miss what makes Ethiopia incredible.
That’s where we come in.
We create effortless, high-quality group trips where everything is handled - so you can actually relax, connect, and experience Ethiopia in a deeper way.

What type of trips are available?
-
1-night lake escape
-
2-night nature + culture trip
-
3-night deep cultural immersion
Your way into the real Ethiopia
We live here in Ethiopia - between the South and Addis.
That means:
-
We know the hidden gems (not just the standard stops)
-
We have decades-long relationships with local communities
-
And we design experiences that are ethical, respectful, and genuinely immersive
You’ll be guided by Geta - a highly respected local guide who:
-
Handles everything on the ground
-
Solves problems before you even notice them
-
Has fluent English as a result of being an expat himself - he was an expat in London for 6 years, meaning he knows more than others what you're looking for!
-
And makes sure your trip runs smoothly from start to finish
We’re also the only operator in the region focused on:
-
Giving back to local communities
-
Running carbon off-set trips
-
Developing ethical tribal travel experiences
-
Offering deeper, non-touristy cultural experiences

Who are we?
Ethical Ethiopian Experiences is a family-run social enterprise founded by Fiona and Geta.
We met through work in South Omo over a decade ago - Fiona as a volunteer who never left Ethiopia, and Geta as a project manager from Turmi who grew up between Hamar traditions and modern Ethiopian life.
What brought us together was a shared frustration: tourism that felt extractive, rushed, and disconnected from the people it claimed to showcase.
So we built something different.
Today, we design travel experiences that are:
-
rooted in long-term local relationships
-
built on real on-the-ground experience
-
and focused on ethical, low-impact travel that directly benefits communities
This isn’t just work for us - it’s our life, our passion, and our family.

Looking for something more tailored?
We also design private expat trips for individuals, families, companies, or small groups.
Whether you’re travelling solo, with children, or as part of a team, we can create a fully customised experience across Ethiopia - with the same level of care, access, and support as our group trips.
Just get in touch with us directly on WhatsApp and we’ll design something around you.
